We 'are soiry to ave to an nounce the death of Mr. lhos. White of Guilford county, on Mon day the 4th day of February. ' He had been afflicted for some time, and died in peace, as we learn. He was a quiet, unobtrusive man, and his age 71. . He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church at Fair field. Mr. White was the father of Mrs.' B. F. Jordan, of High Point. Tuesday the 5th ot February. Monument to Nathaniel Ma con. - A resolution passed its final' read ng in the North Carolina Senate, Tanuary 30th, asking Congress to make an appropriation to erect a monument to Hon. Nathaniel Macon. In many respects, it is said, Nathan iel Macon was the greatest man of his time. We have heard it advanced as the opinion of the foremost of his contemporaries. It is known "that Mr. Macon was one of the few per sons admired and at all times treated deferentially by the eccentric proud, uitter, scornful John Randolph of Roanoke.- The to- men were on terms ; of the closest intimacy, so much so that Mr. Randolph willed to his friend several of his fine horses and a quantity of silver ware, in cluding a costly chandelier of solid silver and elaborate design. This chandelier was'brought out by one of - the descendants of Mr.-1 Macon and made to do service at 'a fashion able wedding in Franklin county not great many years ago, as we, learn from a person who was present on the occasion, and, as a matter of course, the relic is still in existence. There must -have been something very superior in Mr. Macon to have iriven him such influence over Mr. 0 . , , . ....... Randolph, a man who tolerated very few people, and who seemed to have no Veal affection for a living soul, . , ' But would it not be, well to ask Congress to erect the monument on the Guilford Battle Ground?' He was a soldier in the war of the Revolu tion and returned home reluctantly at tnc can ov uib pcupic w uccuiuc k monument on . Guilford.
